QoS Management in a Continuous Media Network System
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a suite of network protocols on a real time operating system that ensures the QoS (Quality of Service) of continuous media applications. The suite consists of a newly designed transport layer, a network layer that includes ST-II, a reservation-based network protocol, and a data link layer providing network access to ATM and Ethernet interfaces. Working together, these protocols manage QoS dynamically and o ers a exible way to utilize network resources. Furthermore, since this new network architecture follows a layered approach, it can adapt easily to di erent types of networking environments.

Until recently the World Wide Web (WWW) and associated browser technologies have provided no support for the delivery of continuous media in real time. Instead, files have been down-loaded completely and then played back. There are now some systems available that provide support for streaming of audio and/or video between WWW servers and clients. However the Internet comprises a vast range of n...

Quality of Service (QoS) refers to a set of rules or techniques that help the network administrators use the available network resources optimally to manage the effects of congestion and to treat the applications according to their needs. The differentiated services architecture (DiffServ) allows providing quality of service to users. The major DiffServ premise is that individual flows with sim...
متن کاملEND-TO-END QoS MANAGEMENT FOR ADAPTIVE VIDEO FLOWS
Distributed audio and video applications need to adapt to fluctuations in delivered quality of service (QoS). By trading off temporal and spatial quality to available bandwidth, or manipulating the playout time of continuous media in response to variation in delay, audio and video flows can be made to adapt to fluctuating QoS with minimal perceptual distortion. In this paper we introduce dynami...
